I checked all of these links on Sunday, Sept. 18 (yes! of this year)  and they all worked! What happens between now and then is something over which we have no control!

PLEASE RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS, USING THE LINKS ON THE RIGHT. PLEASE READ ALL OF THE LINKS.

First, consider the timeline so that you have a grasp of the relative time references.

1.In general, who was Hammurabi? When was he? Why was he so important? Why do you think he found it necessary to development a law code (hint--note the expanse of his empire as compared to earlier empires).

2. Read the Law Codes of Hammurabi. Looking at the entire scope of the Laws, what can you say about the culture which produced them?  Be specific with your description--remember what we have been saying in class and what you have learned from your text. Please do not generalize.

3. Do you see any of the Laws in the Code which would translate into the laws which are common in our culture today? Consult the link to the Legal Concepts and see if this helps. Where have you seen some of these laws (for example-the Ten Commandments). Be specific with your connections. What about our current laws?

4. Pick any five of the laws and rewrite them into modern terms. Pick five which have some relevance to us, today.

5. Read the selections on the Hanging Gardens. What was the purpose of the Hanging Gardens? Why did the King build them? How do archaeologists think they looked. Why are they considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World? What is left of them? What do the Hanging Gardens tell you about the nature of the culture which developed them?
