MAP OF KUSH AND MEROE

"In the 8th. Century BC a new and powerful Kushite Kingdom emerged in the region of Napata, downstream of the 4th. cataract. The native princes who ruled this state laid the foundations of what was to become the greatest and the most sophisticated civilization in ancient Nubia, the Kingdom of Meroe." John Taylor

"...when thou has passed through this part in forty days, thou enterest again into another ship and sailest twelve days; and thereafter thou comest to a great city, the name whereoff is Meroe. And the city is said to be the mother city of the other Ethiopians" Herodotus 500 B.C.

Make a timeline for Kush on the paper provided. This should be at the same scale as the big timeline.

Mark the map with the key locations for Kush using the blank map given.

1.  Look at the map of the Upper Nile and the location of Kush and the great Upper Nile cities. With your knowledge of Egyptian history, why did this civilization thrive? Do you think the Egyptians needed the Kushians? Why? Be specific.

2. Read the History links. What was the most important reason for the success of the area under the Egyptians?

3. What was traded?

4. How was it possible for the Kushians to gain so much power that they could become a dynasty of Egyptian Pharoahs?

5. Look at the pictures of the architectural artifacts found in Kush and specially Meroe. What do these artifacts tell us about the Kushian civilization?  Be specific and give good examples to support your argument.

6. What was the impact of the Greeks? Of raiding nomads? Of the Romans? Of the Christians? Of the Arabs?

7. Reading the history of Kush and Meroe, what do you learn about the progress of civilization? What made the empire rise, gain power, achieve dominance over a vast area, then fall to the point where it was a vassal again?
