Five Themes of Geography
1. Region—Areas that have unifying characteristics. There are many ways to define a region,
depending on the issue being considered. The criteria can be:
a. human characteristics— EX. the Bible Belt
b. physical characteristics— EX. rainforest
2. Place—Answers the question “What is it like there?” What makes a place different from other places?
a. physical—EX. Kennesaw Mountain
b. human—EX. the Big Chicken
3. Human/Environment Interaction—What are the relationships among people and places? How have people change the environment to better suit their needs?
a. Use— EX. fishing
b. Modify—EX. building roads
c. Adapt to—EX. wearing hats in the winter
4. Movement—What are the patterns of movement of people, goods, and ideas.
a. People—EX. a football game
b. Goods—EX. trucks transporting foods from other places
c. Ideas—EX. religion
5. Location—Answers the question “Where is it?”
a. absolute location—more precise or exact location on earth such as latitude and longitude coordinates or an address EX. 2525 Sandy Plains
b. relative location—defines where something is in relation to something else
